The UL-Lafayette Wind Ensemble comprises fifty students from across the entire university. Membership is by invitation following auditions, resulting in an elite ensemble of the school’s finest wind and percussion players. The Wind Ensemble is our top concert band – a select touring group featuring one player per part and flexible instrumentation.  Performances may include works ranging from the full compliment (for traditional symphonic band music), to ensembles of as few as 13 players. The group’s repertoire is diverse and eclectic, concentrating on original wind literature from all style periods.  New music is featured, as well as transcriptions of the highest quality.  The Wind Ensemble has twice been featured at festivals across central France and the Riviera.

William J. Hochkeppel is Director of Bands and Associate Professor of Music at the University of Louisiana-Lafayette.  Previously, he held similar positions at Butler University (Indianapolis) and Eastern Washington University, and also served on faculty at Northwestern University (IL) and Findlay College (OH).  A native of New Jersey, he holds the bachelor and master’s degrees from Northwestern University, and earned the Doctor of Music Education degree from Indiana University.  His training included conducting studies with John P. Paynter and Ray E. Cramer, and applied saxophone with Frederick Hemke and Eugene Rousseau.  In 1977, Hochkeppel won first prize in the National Saxophone Competition, and was a semifinalist in the 1978 Concours Internationale in Gap, France.
