A.C. "Buddy" Himes, Ph.D.

Dr. Addison Choate Himes, Jr. is Director of the School of Music (SOM) at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette (UL) largest of the University of Louisiana System's nine universities, where he has held the rank of Professor since his appointment in 1995. His contributions at the institutional level include positioning the unit in the midst of a $12 million construction project, doubling the unit's endowment base, producing a community-based organization dedicated to enhancing scholarships, and attracting almost $1 million in enhancement grants. The cumulative effect of these achievements, combined with curricular and faculty leadership, has distinguished the SOM as the fastest growing academic unit at the university, having increased enrollment by over 58% during Himes' tenure.

At the national and international level, Dr. Himes is recognized as a conference presenter and panelist, having presented for the National Association for Humanities Education (NAHE), the Association for Technology in Music Instruction (ATMI) and the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM). Moreover, within NASM he was elected to the Board of Directors in 2002, having previously been elected as Chair, Associate Chair, and Secretary of NASM Region Nine. He also serves as a visiting evaluator for the Commission of Accreditation.

Publications in professional journals have distinguished Himes as an authority in higher education. His publications on administrative topics and teaching effectiveness may be found in Academic Leader: The Newsletter for Academic Deans and Department Chairs, Department Chair Online Resource Center of the American Council on Education (ACE), the Kappa Delta Pi Record, and the Record in Educational Leadership. Earlier publications, in the Journal of the International Trombone Association (ITA) and The Instrumentalist, include over twenty articles on psycho-acoustics, pedagogy, and performance of the trombone.

Apart from his professional activities, Himes has risen to a vantage point of prominence in extra curricular activities. His dedication to community service has been demonstrated by his election as President of the Rotary Club of Lafayette, having served in a similar capacity in Alexandria, LA prior to his appointment at UL. He was elected by his peers in Louisiana to two terms as Chair of the Louisiana Music Executives of Higher Education (LMEHE). Also, having served on the boards of most of the arts organizations in the community, he is a three-time appointee to the Grant Review Board of the Louisiana Division of the Arts (DOA). His biography was selected for inclusion in Who's Who Among American Professionals, Who's Who Among American Teachers, International Who's Who in Music and Musicians Directory, and Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
