Himes, Ph.D.
Dr. Addison
Choate Himes, Jr. is Director of the School of Music (SOM) at the
University of Louisiana at Lafayette
(UL) largest of the University
of Louisiana System's nine universities, where he has held the
rank of Professor since his appointment in 1995. His contributions
at the institutional level include positioning the unit in the midst
of a $12 million construction project, doubling the unit's endowment
base, producing a community-based organization dedicated to enhancing
scholarships, and attracting almost $1 million in enhancement grants.
The cumulative effect of these achievements, combined with curricular
and faculty leadership, has distinguished the SOM as the fastest
growing academic unit at the university, having increased enrollment
by over 58% during Himes' tenure.
At the national
and international level, Dr. Himes is recognized as a conference
presenter and panelist, having presented for the National
Association for Humanities Education (NAHE), the Association
for Technology in Music Instruction (ATMI) and the National
Association of Schools of Music (NASM). Moreover, within NASM
he was elected to the Board of Directors in 2002, having previously
been elected as Chair, Associate Chair, and Secretary of NASM Region
Nine. He also serves as a visiting evaluator for the Commission
of Accreditation.
Publications
in professional journals have distinguished Himes as an authority
in higher education. His publications on administrative topics and
teaching effectiveness may be found in Academic
Leader: The Newsletter for Academic Deans and Department Chairs,
Department Chair Online Resource Center of the American
Council on Education (ACE), the Kappa Delta Pi Record,
and the Record in Educational Leadership. Earlier publications,
in the Journal of the International Trombone Association
(ITA) and The Instrumentalist,
include over twenty articles on psycho-acoustics, pedagogy, and
performance of the trombone.
Apart from his
professional activities, Himes has risen to a vantage point of prominence
in extra curricular activities. His dedication to community service
has been demonstrated by his election as President of the Rotary
Club of Lafayette, having served in a similar capacity in Alexandria,
LA prior to his appointment at UL. He was elected by his peers in
Louisiana to two terms as Chair of the Louisiana Music Executives
of Higher Education (LMEHE). Also, having served on the boards of
most of the arts organizations in the community, he is a three-time
appointee to the Grant Review Board of the Louisiana
Division of the Arts (DOA). His biography was selected for inclusion
in Who's Who Among American Professionals, Who's Who Among American
Teachers, International Who's Who in Music and Musicians Directory,
and Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
