MR. BRIAN TAYLOR
Brian Stevon Taylor holds a Bachelor of Science in Music Education from Jacksonville State University in Jacksonville, Alabama. Graduating in 1991 he received the cum laude designation. He was a guest conductor with the A Cappella Choir, directed by Bayne Dobbins, the JSU Concert Band, directed by Tracy Tyler, the JSU Symphonic Band, directed by Dr. David Walters. He began his graduate studies at The University of Alabama in 1991. During his tenure, he served the band program as a graduate assistant and was the Assistant Director of the UA Tuba and Euphonium Ensemble.
In 1992 Mr. Taylor began teaching in the Cullman County (Alabama) School District where he taught instrumental music in a K-12 environment. His duties included all aspects of the band program, general music, and classroom assignments in computers and math. In 1994 he transferred to the Cobb County (Georgia) School District. Over his four-year tenure, Mr. Taylor served as an assistant director on the middle school level and as a director on the high school level. Additionally, he served as an extracurricular instructor for the Lassiter High School Band, Alfred Watkins director. Mr. Taylors marching and concert bands consistently received superior ratings in contest and festival formats.
In 1998 Mr. Taylor began his studies at the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg. He earned the Master of Music in Instrumental Conducting in 1999 and is currently completing a Doctor of Musical Arts in Instrumental Conducting with a projected graduation date of May 2003. During his tenure at USM, he has served as a graduate assistant in the band program, Interim Director of the USM Concert Band, Interim Director of Pep Bands, and Conductor of the Southern Chamber Winds. He formed the USM Brass Choir and served as its first conductor. He has been a guest conductor with the USM Wind Ensemble, directed by Dr. Thomas Fraschillo.
Currently, Mr. Taylor is the Assistant Director of Bands at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. His duties include directing the 200 member Pride of Acadiana Marching Band, Conductor for both the University Symphonic Band and University Concert Band, Director of the Ragin' Cajun Basketball Band, and Director of the L'Acadienne Winter Guard. His classroom assignments comprise basic conducting, marching band techniques, secondary instrumental methods, form and analysis, and music appreciation. In November 2002, Mr. Taylor was appointed Conductor and Music Director for the New Iberia Community Wind Band, New Iberia, Louisiana.
Mr. Taylors conducting teachers include Dr. Thomas Fraschillo, Mr. Steven Moser, Dr. Gerald Welker, Dr. David Walters, Dr. Richard Armstrong, and Mr. Bayne Dobbins. Mr. Taylor has had private study in euphonium, piano, and voice.
Mr. Taylors performance credits include the JSU Symphonic Band, the JSU Concert Band, the JSU Brass Choir, the JSU A Cappella Choir, the JSU Community Chorus, The Alabama Wind Ensemble, The Alabama Contemporary Ensemble, the UA Tuba and Euphonium Ensemble, the UA Mens Glee Club, The University of Alabama in Birmingham Community Concert Band, the USM Tuba and Euphonium Ensemble, Chorale Acadienne, and The Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps from Rockford, Illinois.
Mr. Taylor holds memberships with the National Band Association, College Band Director's National Association, Music Educator's National Conference, College Music Society, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Phi Delta Kappa Professional Education Society, Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society, Alpha Psi Omega Drama Honor Society, Omicron Delta Kappa Leadership Honor Society, and Kappa Delta Pi Education Honor Society.
