Instructions for students intending
to
be graduate students in music
Please accept our sincere best wishes for success with
your musical endeavors. We hope that the School of Music will be able to
provide you with the musical study that will lead to your career goals.
Below are procedures for continuing your college career in
pursuit of a graduate degree in music.
STEP I - Apply to the University.
Consult the information on the Graduate School
website for guidelines for the Graduate Record Exam,
instructions on how to apply to the university, and
other matters.
Graduate admissions generally require a completed bachelor's degree in
a music field from an accredited institution, a minimum GPA of 2.75 (on
a 4.0 scale) on the undergraduate transcript, and a satisfactory score on the GRE. Specific criteria
for admissions standards, application forms, and information on
graduate assistantships or other forms of graduate financial aid is
available from the Office of the Dean of the Graduate School (337)
482-6965 (email gradschool@louisiana.edu) and from the Graduate Coordinator of the School of Music, Dr. Andrea Loewy (337) 482-5214 (email loewy@louisiana.edu).
STEP II - Audition, Diagnostic
Testing
In order to properly advise entering students, the School of Music administers a performance audition, and placement tests in music theory and history.
Performance Audition
An audition/interview at the School of Music is required before acceptance by the School of Music. Students may audition anytime during the fall or spring semesters by contacting Dr. Andrea Loewy by email or phone (337) 482-5214.
Theory Test
Contact Dr. Robert
Willey for information on the theory placement examination, and Dr. Jonathan Kulp about the music history placement exam.
STEP III - Scholarships
A limited number of Graduate Assistantships (GA) are available based on departmental need and students' performance level. GAs provide a tuition waiver and a stipend of $5,500. Assistantships are renewable for up to two academic years dependent upon GPA, progress towards degree, and departmental evaluation of assistantship duties. Housing stipends may be available to assist with on-campus housing. Information may be obtained from Dr. Susanna Garcia.
A limited amount of financial aid is available from the Friends of Music also based on departmental need and students' performance level. Amounts are generally between $1,000 and $1,500 per semester.
Also, for graduate students in music education, the Teacher Tuition Incentive and Exemption program is available on a limited basis through the University College. This provides a partial waiver of tuition. Eligibility criteria are available from University College. In-service teachers may also wish to consult their local school boards for tuition assistance and sabbatical leave possibilities.

obtained fron the Housing
Office at (337) 482-6471.
