Music Education 4-Year Plan

Upper Division Requirements

Note: To be admitted to Upper Division, all Music Education majors must meet the following requirements in addition to the general University requirements for upper division:

Courses requiring "C" or higher

  • All EDCI, IRED, EDFL, READ
  • College Algebra
  • All "major" courses—MUS, AMUS
  • PSYC courses—220 and 313

Other Requirements

  • Passing scores MUS Praxis exam 5113 + PLT (Princ. Of Learning and Teaching) prior to Student Teaching
  • Student teaching: one semester—combination of elementary, middle, high school experiences

Praxis Exam Requirements: Students must pass the Praxis I PPST exams (Reading, Writing, Math) or submit an ACT composite score of 22 or higher. Students must also pass the Music content exam, 0113, and the PLT exam 0522 or 523 or 524 prior to Student Teaching.

  1. Students with Math ACT scores of 19-20 take MATH 103 and 104 concurrently (5 credits total) instead of MATH 105
  2. MATH elective: 201, 206, 210, or STAT 214
  3. SCI electives taken should total 9 hours: 3 hours of Biology and 3 hours from Chemistry, Geology or Physics. 6 of the 9 hours must be in the same science; credit cannot be earned for both GEOL 105 and GEOL 225
  4. HIST 101, 102, 221, or 222
  5. MUS elective: select 3 Minor Instrument courses: Brass (181), Percussion (183), Strings (185), Woodwinds (187)
  6. LIT elective: Any English or foreign language literature course at or above the 200 level
  7. String majors should see their advisor for a course substitution
  8. Required ensembles for this degree plan are listed below under “Courses for Ensemble Credit.” Any combination of “Courses for Ensemble Credit” is allowed, except where noted in “Constraints and Exceptions” column, where allowable substitutions also appear.

7 Semesters of Ensemble Required

The courses you can take for ensemble credit depend on your primary instruments.

Strings

You can take AMUS 190/390 University Orchestra for ensemble credit. Bassists may substitute two semesters of AMUS 155 Wind Ensemble.

Winds, Brass & Percussion

The courses you can take for ensemble credit are:

  • AMUS 152/352 Marching Band (two semesters minimum)
  • AMUS 153/353 Concert Band
  • AMUS 154/354 Symphonic Band
  • AMUS 155/355 Wind Ensemble
  • AMUS 190/390 University Orchestra

Guitar

You must take four semesters of AMUS 250/450 Chamber Music and two semesters minimum of AMUS 152/352 Marching Band.

You can substitute two semesters maximum as:

  • A singer in AMUS 140/340 University Chorus, AMUS 145/345 University Chorale, or AMUS 146/346 Chamber Singers
  • OR on a major instrument in AMUS 160/360 Traditional Music Ensemble, AMUS 170/370 Jazz Ensemble, or AMUS 180/380 Jazz Combo

Jazz Guitar

You must take four semesters of AMUS 170/370 Jazz Ensemble and AMUS 180/380 Jazz Combo, plus two semesters minimum of AMUS 152/352 Marching Band.

You can substitute two semesters maximum as:

  • A singer in AMUS 140/340 University Chorus, AMUS 145/345 University Chorale, or AMUS 146/346 Chamber Singers
  • OR on a major instrument in AMUS 160/360 Traditional Music Ensemble
