Piano Proficiency

Music majors seeking the Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Arts in Music Education degrees must demonstrate piano proficiency in the following areas:

  • Technique
  • Reading
  • Repertoire
  • Accompanying
  • Improvisation
  • Score Reading and Transposition

Students may satisfy this requirement in one of the following ways:

  1. Enroll for and complete Keyboard Skills 1–3 (MUS 141, 142, 143) with the minimum grade of "C."
  2. Students may request to take a Piano Proficiency exam in lieu of completing Keyboard Skills 1–3 if they feel that they possess the requisite background in piano.

Credit by Exam

Music majors may apply for credit by examination for any of the three Keyboard Skills classes if they feel that they possess the requisite background in piano.

The Exam must be completed prior to the beginning of the semester the course is offered. Students must obtain the score of "C" or better on each section of the exam to pass.
