Performing Arts Major Advising

Personalized advising is one of the hallmarks of the Performing Arts program's attention to your individual needs. As a student in the Performing Arts major,  you will be assigned to a faculty advisor in your concentration (either Theatre or Dance).  You can determine who your advisor is by checking on ULink. Academic advising usually happens around the middle of the semester to give you time prepare for registering for classes in the following semester. Usually, you will get an email letting you know when advising will begin so that you can make sure to set up an appointment with your advisor during the University's designated advising period. You can also check the University's academic calendar for advising dates. Here are some steps that you can take to ensure that your advising appointment is as productive as possible:

  • Make sure you know who your assigned advisor is by checking on ULink.  If you do not have an advisor assigned, please check with the Performing Arts administrative assistant for help.
  • Sign up for an advising appointment with your assigned advisor.  Typically, faculty will post appointment sign-up sheets on their office doors.
  • Prepare for your appointment by reviewing your Dance curriculum and Dance Four Year plan, or Theatre curriculum and Theatre Four Year plan. Look at your options for any General Education courses or elective courses to have an idea of what you might like to take and when those courses are available.
  • Pick up the Academic Advising Forum (the blue sheet) and the Advising Checklist from the main Performing Arts office in McLaurin Hall room 109 and  bring those with you to your advising appointment.
  • Arrive at your appointment on time.  In order to get the most out of this one on one time with your faculty advisor, arriving promptly and ready to discuss the classes that you have in mind for the next term is key.
  • Once you're advising appointment is complete, register for your classes on ULink after your registration appointment opens.  You can find your registration appointment information on ULink.  Be sure to register for the courses that you have been advised to take.  Failure to adhere to the courses you and your advisor agreed upon in advising may lead to a delay in your graduation timeline.
  • If you have questions, wish to choose a different course or cannot get a seat in a course you had planned for with your advisor, check in with your academic advisor as soon as possible.
