  Dr. Chan Kiat Lim, Pianist
Assistant Professor

Chan Kiat Lim was born in Alor Setar, Malaysia. He started his piano studies at the age of six and received his music certifications in piano, violin, and theory from the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, London; and the Trinity College of Music, London. While in Sedaya College (Malaysia) under the tutelage of Rickie Oui, he was awarded the College of Creative Arts Performance Grant from West Virginia University, which brought him to the U.S.A. in 1995. After completing his Bachelor’s degree there with Dr. James Miltenberger, he went on to the University of Cincinnati where he received his Master’s and Doctor of Musical Arts (D.M.A.) degrees from the College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) as a scholarship student of Eugene and Elizabeth Pridonoff. Lim’s D.M.A. degree is in piano performance with a secondary emphasis on piano pedagogy. In addition to fulfilling his performance requirements, he published a doctoral thesis entitled “Twentieth-Century Piano Nocturnes by American Composers: Echoes of Romanticism.”

Lim has won several piano competitions including the Young Artist Concerto Competition, WVMTNA Collegiate Piano Competition, and WGUC Cincinnati Public Classical Radio Audition. In addition, Lim has worked with esteemed artists and pedagogues such as Dorothy Delay, Masao Kawasaki, Peter Oundjian, Sandra Rivers, and James Tocco. He has served as the instrumental and vocal collaborative pianist for the 2002 Opera Theatre and Music Festival of Lucca in Italy and as the official collaborative pianist for the 45th World Piano Competition.

An active recitalist, he has performed in the United States, Asia, and Europe. Most recently, he was the Convention Artist at the WVMTA State Convention where he performed the Bartók’s Concerto for Two Pianos and Orchestra with the WVU Symphony Orchestra. Lim has also performed solo recitals in Italy, Romania, and throughout the United States including recent performances at Music At Penn Alps Concert Series in Maryland and Steinway Hall, New York City.  In spring 2008, Lim will embark on a seven-city recital tour with bass-baritone Shawn Roy to promote a program entitled Song Cycles by Twentieth-Century American Composers

At present, Lim is a member of the piano faculty at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette where he teaches applied piano, piano literature, and class piano. Lim’s interest and research in Twentieth-century music—particularly by American composers—and piano pedagogy have resulted in invitations for presentations and master classes at regional and national levels. An active pedagogue and clinician, he has presented “WEB-Based Videos in Group Piano Instruction,” at the 27th World Conference of the International Society for Music Education in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and recently at the WVMTA State Convention. This spring, Lim will co-present at the MTNA National Conference in Denver, CO.
