Gabriel Miller is pleased to join the faculty of the University of Louisiana, Lafayette as Assistant Professor of Music Theory and Coordinator of the Theory Division.  His research has led him to propose refinements to Hugo Riemann’s Funktionstheorie that bear significantly on the harmonic analysis of tonal music.  His theory is articulated in his article, “The Death and Resurrection of Function,” which is published in the inaugural issue of The Ohio State Online Music Journal, www.osomjournal.org.  Miller also serves on the editorial board of the OSOM Journal.

Miller has presented papers at various regional conferences, including MTSE, MTSMA, CCM, the University of Minnesota, and Yale University.  Two of these papers examined the application of Jonathan Kramer’s concept of nonlinear time to funk music.

Away from music theory, Miller enjoys cooking, college football, and Presidential history.  He has also been happily married to his wife, Samantha, since September of 2008.
