Dr. Robert Willey teaches music media and theory at UL Lafayette's School of Music, and Pro Tools at the South Louisiana Community College. He holds the Ruth Stodghill Girard/LEQSF Regent Professor in Music endowed chair, is the Media Division Coordinator, and webmaster for the School of Music.

Willey majored in music at the University of North Texas, and received a Masters Degree in Computer Music and Ph.D. in Theoretical Studies from the University of California, San Diego.

For five years he assisted a technology and cultural exchange program between UCSD, Stanford University, and a studio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, funded by the Rockefeller Foundation.  A Fulbright Scholarship in Brazil teaching computer music composition and performance led to two more years as a visiting professor, where he led courses in chamber music and piano at the Carlos Gomes Conservatory, and set up a teacher training program to develop online courses at the Federal University of Pará in Belém.

Since arriving at UL Lafayette he has received a number of research and equipment grants to work with sound spatialization, video processing, and DVD production, and build studio facilities.  He is also active in the recording and distribution of regional music from South Louisiana. His DVD From La La to Zydeco: Creole and Zydeco Music from Louisiana was published by the Center for Louisiana Studies in 2005.

His research interests include programmable instruments, analysis of the music of Antônio Carlos (Tom) Jobim, synthesis of the music of Conlon Nancarrow, multimedia production, and music composition. He is presently writing a book on Brazilian Piano for Hal Leonard.
