Selection for most of the
scholarships listed below is made through competitive auditions.

FINANCIAL AID
Both the University and the School of Music sponsor financial aid
programs.
TOPS and Academic Scholarships - Information
is available from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette Scholarship
Office. Entering freshmen with a 3.0 cumulative grade point
average and who score at least a 22 on the ACT (minimum of 7 on the
English, and minimum or 19 on the math) are eligible.

Endowed Scholarships - Are available for music
majors in keyboard, guitar, voice, strings, and band instruments.
Approximately fifteen awards are made each year. These range in size
from $500 to $1,000 per academic year. Contact the chair of the

Band- The basic marching band stipend (currently $600 for the Fall semester) is available for students of any major who complete the marching band season. No audition is required for this basic award with your high school band director's recommendation. Stipend amounts in excess of $600, or continuation of the award for the Spring semester is available on a competitive basis. Housing awards are also available. Choral - Students of any major are eligible
for the choral ensemble stipend which ranges from $400 to $800 per
academic year. For more information contact the director of

Jazz- Jazz awards are available for
outstanding musicians performing with a jazz ensemble or combo.
Audition requirements include scales plus two contrasting jazz
tunes that demonstrate the applicant's improvisation ability.

Orchestra- Scholarships and stipends are
available ranging from $700 to full tuition to music majors as well as
non-music majors who perform for credit with the UL Lafayette Symphony
Orchestra. The orchestra has openings for players in all sections
including strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion. Students are
encouraged to arrange an audition as early in the academic year as

Friends of Music Scholarships- Are available
for music majors in any performance area. Approximately six
awards are made each year. The amount is normally $500 per academic
year. Again, contact the chair of the scholarship committee

Performance Competitions- Performance
competitions are held annually. Students compete for cash prizes and
honors. Competitions are sponsored through various sources,
primarily the Friends of Music. Currently the competitions
include the UL Lafayette Symphony Orchestra Aria/Concerto Competition,
the Frank Hanley Memorial Piano Competition, the Friends of Music Vocal
Competition, and the Friends of Music Guitar Competition. Contact the

Graduate Assistantships- The School of Music
currently offers graduate teaching
assistantships in brass, woodwinds, percussion, guitar, piano,
strings/orchestra, band, choral/vocal, jazz studies, music media, and
theory/composition. Assistantships provide a tuition waiver and
provide a stipend of $5,500. Assistantships are awarded for two
academic years. The deadline for application is usually early
