Jeffrey George

On the music faculty at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette since 2001, Dr. Jeffrey George is Professor of Guitar Studies at the at the School of Music and Performing Arts. Playing the instrument from a young age, Dr. George has had a variety of musical experiences performing in rock, country, bluegrass, reggae, and blues bands, along with varied studio session involvement. His desire for more dedicated study led him to nine years of university work with celebrated classical guitarists Frank Koonce, Ernesto Bitteti, Paul Reilly and Scott Tennant. Dr. George has been the recipient of numerous awards and scholarships including support for additional academic programs at Berklee College of Music, Musicians Institute in Hollywood, California, and the National Guitar Summer Workshop.

His jazz teachers include Joe Pass, Jack Wilkins, Joe Diorio, Ted Greene and Jon Herington. His performance credentials include appearances with Joe Henderson, Billy Childs, Richard “Groove” Holmes, Ritchie Havens, Taj Mahal and David Baker.

Dr. George manages to maintain an active performing career in addition to his teaching. His book Angelo Michele Bartolotti:  Performance Edition of Thirteen Suites from Libro Secondo di Chitarra (1655) is published through Mel Bay, Inc, and guitar classroom course method books Guitar Smart and Guitar Smarter through Luniver Press in the U.K. He is also a regular contributor to Just Jazz Guitar.

Dr. George has been an invited lecturer for the Guitar Foundation of America and is an active member of the American String Teachers Association, College Music Society and the Jazz Educators Network.
