Required ensembles for this degree plan are listed below under “Courses for Ensemble Credit.” Any combination of “Courses for Ensemble Credit” is allowed, except where noted in “Constraints and Exceptions” column, where allowable substitutions also appear.

8 Semesters of Ensemble Required

The ensembles you can participate in depend on your primary instrument.

Strings

  • Courses for Ensemble Credit: AMUS 190/390 University Orchestra
  • Exceptions: Bassists may substitute two semesters of AMUS 155 Wind Ensemble

Winds, Brass and Percussion

  • Courses for Ensemble Credit: Minimum two semesters each of AMUS 155/344 Wind Ensemble and AMUS 190/390 University Orchestra
  • Exceptions: You may substitute two semesters in your first semester with either AMUS 153/353 Concert Band or AMUS 154/354 Symphonic Band

Guitar

  • Courses for Ensemble Credit: AMUS 250/450 Chamber Music
  • Exceptions: You may substitute two semesters maximum as a singer in AMUS 140/340 University Chorus; AMUS 145/345 University Chorale; AMUS 146/346 Chamber Singers OR on guitar in AMUS 160/360 Traditional Music Ensemble; AMUS 170/370 Jazz Ensemble; AMUS 180/380 Jazz Combo.

Piano

  • Courses for Ensemble Credit: 4 semesters of AMUS 260/406 Collaborative Piano and 4 semesters chosen from AMUS 206/406 Collaborative Piano, AMUS 240/440 Piano Ensemble, and AMUS 250/450 Chamber Music; OR as a pianist in AMUS 140/340 University Chorus, AMUS 145/345 University Chorale, AMUS 146/346 Chamber Singers, AMUS 155/355 Wind Ensemble, and AMUS 190/390 University Orchestra
  • Exceptions: You can substitute two semesters maximum as a singer in AMUS 140/340 University Chorus, AMUS 145/345 University Chorale, and AMUS 146/346 OR as a piano player for AMUS 160/360 Traditional Music Ensemble, AMUS 170/370 Jazz Ensemble, AMUS 180/380 Jazz Combo

Voice

  • Course for Ensemble Credit: AMUS 146/346 Chamber Singers. To ensure the highest level of performance quality in our vocal program, Voice Performance Majors must audition for Chamber Singers, and are expected to enroll if accepted by the Director of Choral Activities
  • Exceptions: You can substitute two semesters in your first year in AMUS 145/345 University Chorale. In your 7th and 8th semester, you can substitute with MUS 451 Operatic Performance.
